St. Mary’s Basilica
Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary, often called the ” crown of the city of Gdansk ” to impress us with its vastness. Powerful its walls and towers rise high above the city skyline and the vast surroundings.
It has a volume of approx. 155 000 m 3 , the length of 105.5 m , a width in the transept 66 m . On 26 free-standing pillars , supports a magnificent starry vault and crystal. It rises to a height of 30 m. Church interior are introduced all the buttresses which form the crown 31 shrines, circumferential entire temple. The interior of the church is illuminated by 36 huge windows , the largest of which, decorated with stained glass is located in the eastern part of the presbytery.
For the interior of the church leads 7 gates : handbags, Councilors, High, Mary, Groblowa with payloads over her clock “Groblowym” from 1635 to 1637 r., Szewska, which adorns the tympanum “The scene of the Dormition of the Virgin” from 1420. And the gate tower.
